Tesla Race Discrimination Lawsuits Continue @Reuters
Tesla has requested a U.S. judge to temporarily halt a federal agency's lawsuit alleging severe harassment of Black workers at its California assembly plant.
The company argues that two similar cases, one by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and another by California's Civil Rights Department (CRD), should be resolved first before addressing the federal lawsuit.
The EEOC lawsuit claims that Black workers at Tesla's Fremont plant faced racist slurs, graffiti, and retaliation from 2015 to the present.
California's CRD filed a similar lawsuit in 2022, accusing Tesla of tolerating discriminatory conditions against Black workers.
A proposed class action from Tesla workers in 2017 also alleges racial harassment and is in state court.
Tesla argues that simultaneous prosecution of the federal case and the existing state court actions could lead to duplication, inconsistent rulings, and inefficient use of judicial resources.
Tesla denies wrongdoing in the pending cases and emphasizes its commitment to equal employment opportunity.
The company is also appealing a $3.2 million award in a separate race harassment lawsuit filed by a Black former elevator operator at the Fremont plant.
